Sen. Claiborne Pell from Rhode Island sponsored the Basic Educational Oppotunity Grants . Soon after, it was termed as Pell Grant due to the senator’s massive share. It is a scholarship created by the government to help underprivileged students. Unlike a student loan, this scholarhip is given solely by the government without the need of reimbursement.
For the applicant to pass a Pell Grant eligibility, he or shee needs to meet the following criteria:
* The student has to be a US citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
* Absolutely no criminal records or hasn’t served time in any state or Federal prison.
* A high school graduate or has a GED.
* Must be taking up an undergraduate course that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate from any of the 4,500 participating schools in the US.
* The mother and father of the applicant should have a yearly income of $50,000 or less.
Once qualified, a student and his or her family need to fill-up an application form from Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . A person may either phone FAFSA for an application or obtain them online. As soon as done, you can send it back in the website or mail it to their address. You have to generate a PIN in the website to certify your application. The processing time may take up to ten weeks, however you may always check the status online.
The approval of the application for Pell Grant eligibility significantly depends on the expected family contribution or EFC which will be investigated by FAFSA.
