Low glycemic index foods, truly a health breakthrough

Discovery of the low glycemic index foods has really revolutionized the way we view food and food combinations today. Foods such as bread and pasta and no longer tabu. We now understand that it’s not only the carbohydrate number that matters but the combination of foods as well. There is a certain freedom that comes with knowledge and this breakthrough has opened our eyes to the possibility of so many meal combinations.
Low glycemic index foods can be found amongst every food group thereby providing a healthy bounty from which to choose when trying to develop more health conscious eating habits. Foods such as bread, pasta and starchy vegetables are no longer off limits. Although the indexing of carbohydrates has made it easier to identify safe foods this does not mean we can be unrestrained when it comes to portions. Even low glycemic index foods can be detrimental if eaten in excess.
Let’s discuss some low glycemic index foods. Starting with most everyone’s favorite, bread. Bread comes in such delicious varieties and warm out of the oven seems to be the best way to eat it. Breads made with sour dough or whole grains like Ezekiel bread are lower on the low glycemic index foods list than those made with refined flour. Enjoying quinoa or rice and corn pasta as opposed to regular durum pasta will help as well. These rice and corn varieties are so tasty that you may not even notice the difference.
If you enjoy a bowl of cereal in the morning try oats, bran, corn or rice cereal instead of whole wheat cereal. Basmati rice is a great substitute for regular white rice. And I believe that most people would agree it is so much more fragrant and flavorful than your average rice variety. Potatoes should be greatly reduced from your diet if you are interested in switching to low glycemic index foods but if you must have them try red potatoes or sweet potatoes.
On the glycemic index foods list there is a low ranking counterpart for virtually all of your favorite foods. Discipline is necessary if you want to use this knowledge to improve your overall health. While implementing a pattern of eating that includes low glycemic index foods is great, it is only part of what is needed to live a truly health conscious life.
Changing your habits must include your physiological and mental well being as well. If you are dedicated to following through with a healthier lifestyle you will find success.
