Diabetic dog care and knowing what to feed your diabetic dog is vital just as it is for humans. Managing diabetes effectively is essential so that you can control and regulate the blood glucose levels. Maintaining weight in your diabetic dog is very important otherwise you will only create more complications than are necessary. Putting your dog on a diet that is high in fibre and complex carbohydrates as well as low fat will help tremendously with weight problems.
There are many commercial dog foods readily available from your local supermarket, however, cooking your own meals for your dog is going to benefit your dog much better and will allow your diabetic dog to achieve good health a lot easier. Many of the commercial dog foods that are available contain dangerous ingredients that are of no benefit and can actually harm your dog; there are many cases where pets have suffered terrible complications as well as fatal conditions. Always consult with your vet when you change diets for your diabetic dog so you can make sure that you are doing the thing by your dog.
Plan to keep the diet similar or the same for your diabetic dog, because if you change it too drastically, it can cause the blood sugar levels to change and can work against the measurement of insulin medication that has been prescribed.
Following is a sample of a fresh cooked meal for your diabetic dog:
1 cup of cooked brown rice
1 cup of cooked meat
1 cup of raw vegetables (frozen can be used when fresh is not available)
cup of yoghurt or cottage cheese
Combine these ingredients together and mix well, serve and see how your dog enjoys this wonderful meal full of taste and nutrients that will be beneficial to your dog’s health. Make sure you freeze or refrigerate the remainder. Do not keep more than three days in the fridge and no longer than two months in the freezer.
When preparing meals for your diabetic dog, please remember that there are some foods that can be very dangerous as well as life threatening for your beloved pet. Some of these foods include:
Onions Chocolate Coffee Raisins Grapes Cocoa Macadamia Nuts
Implementing a well-balanced healthy nutritious diet for your diabetic dog is essential for the long-term health of your beloved dog and will allow you to avoid complications that can develop with diabetes.
