Avandia is used as an anti-diabetic medication and falls in the group of thiazolidinedione. It has the pharmaco dynamics of an insulin sensitizer, which turns cells more adaptive to insulin therapy in insulin dependant diabetes. The tablets are available in 2 mg, 4 mg and 8 mg strength. The main molecule is Rosiglitazone, which is available in the brand name of Avandia and is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in combination with diet control, exercising, weight loss and withdrawal of smoking.

Avandia is prescribed along with other anti diabetic drugs like metformin and sulfonylureas and insulin. This product is not used in type 1 diabetic patients because there is no requirement of insulin in the treatment procedure.

No Refampin drug is administered along with Avandia because the former reduces the blood concentration of the drug and diminishes the effect of Avandia. On the contrary, Gemfibrozil increases the drug concentration in the blood and enhances side effects.

The familiar side effects are upper respiratory tract infection, ordinary headache, pain in the back, fatigue, occasional sinusitis, diarrhea and both hyper or hypoglycemia even if the drug is taken in combination with other anti-diabetic drugs.
